4WD MARKET IN 2016 - WINNERS AND LOSERS
SUVs and real 4WD wagons and utes increased market share in 2016.
Australia has posted its third new car sales record in four years with 1,178,133 new passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles sold in 2016, an increase of two per cent on the 2015 calendar year.
According to VFACTS the 2016 record year marked a continued shift in buyer preference, with a light commercial vehicle, the Toyota Hilux, topping the national
vehicle sales charts over a 12-month period for the first time in Australian automotive history.
Australia’s top-selling vehicle for 2016 was the Toyota Hilux with 42,104 sales, of which 31,076 were 4x4s. This was followed by the Toyota Corolla with
40,330 sales, The Hyundai i30 (37,772), Ford Ranger (36,934, of which 30,880 were 4x4s) and Mazda3 (36,107).
In the small SUV market Mazda's CX-3 just pipped Mitsubishi's ASX to the post, with Honda's HR-V and Nissan's Qashqai almost dead-heating for third place. Subaru's XV was fifth in the market.
In the SUV medium segment the Mazda CX-5 stayed ahead of the Hyundai Tucson, the Toyota RAV-4 and the Nissan X-Trail.
In the Large SUV segment the 'real-4WD' Toyota Prado lead the pack, followed by the Subaru Outback, Toyota Kluger and Holden Captiva.
Notable in this segement was the continual slide of Jeep Grand Cherokee sales- down to less than half their 2014 and 2015 benchmarks.
In the Upper Large segment the LandCruiser continued to outsell the Patrol by around 4:1, but Patrol V8 sales climbed slightly.
In the ute and cab/chassis market the HiLux record has already been noted, but the Ranger 4WD ran a very close second to the HiLux - only 200 sales behind
it for the year. The Mitsubishi Triton was third, followed by the Holden Colorado and the Nissan Navara.
