MSA4X4 ALUMINIUM DRAWER UNITS

This storage solution company has gone metal

MSA4x4 is well known for its soft storage systems, but the company has released an aluminium drawer range that breaks new ground.

The MSA4x4 Explorer drawer system was released at the 2016 Melbourne 4WD show, where it drew a great deal of attention. We inspected the display units and were very impressed with the design and quality of the drawer units.

Each drawer measures 275mm deep and 530mm wide, and can be supplied as single or double units. Three lengths are available: 945mm, 1045mm and 1365mm.

Being aluminium the MSA4x4 drawer units are said to be lighter than most steel assemblies.

MSA4x4 says the drawer units have been impact tested with 250kg test loads to ADR and AS/NZS criteria and have a lifetime guarantee.

The drawers slide on ‘pro-glide’ runners with sealed bearings and roll out beyond full length, so there’s no need to reach under an overhead lip. There’s also a ‘stay-open’ block that’s claimed capable of holding the loaded drawers open on a 30-degree downslope.

Illumination is built-in, using LED strip lighting. Even better is integrated wiring to a contact patch, so there’s no cable that has to move when the drawers move.

‘Wing’ panels are shaped to suit specific 4WD ute and wagon models and, in addition to lift-up access, have removable face panels as well.

The upper surface is made from 12mm marine plywood, faced with marine carpet and is designed to accept fridge slides and tie-downs.

The locking system seems very sturdy and MSA4x4 says that it cannot be force-opened from the bottom of the drawer.

MSA 4X4 granted US Patent

In October 2018 MSA 4X4 Accessories was granted a United States Patent (Patent No.US 10,076,188 B2) from the US Trademark and Patent Office for the Explorer Aluminium Storage Drawer System.

The Patent excludes others from making, using, offering for sale or selling the invention throughout the United States of America, or importing the invention into the United States of America.

Prominent patented features include the “Pro-Glide” system which utilises the side of the drawers and the frame as the slide unit, meaning that no usable storage space inside the drawers is lost to traditional slide runners.

The over-extension design uses custom sealed bearings and removes the need for additional slide components, maximising storage space and enabling the drawers to bear heavy loads - crash tested to 250kg per pair - and be relatively maintenance free.

The patented ‘stay-open block’ prevents a fully loaded, open drawer from unexpectedly slamming shut. This block forms two electrical contacts that create an electrical circuit, without any moving wires, to power an LED strip in each drawer.

Shane Miles, the man behind MSA 4X4’s innovative product range stated:

“This patent validates the years of R&D that have gone into our drawer system, as well as enhancing our intellectual property position in one of the largest markets in the world.

“We are now in a position where we can defend our IP and secure our position in a global market.

“The unique features presented in our patented Drawer System have re-set the benchmark and continue to reaffirm our position as a market-leading, innovative Australian brand.”

Its introduction into MSA 4X4’s range has opened the door for customers wanting the complete MSA 4X4 storage solution fit out that includes drawers, drop slides, fridge barriers, tourer and basket pack rooftop bags, seat organisers and many canvas storage accessories.
