Electric 'Benz SUV coming Down Under this year

Mercedes-Benz has previewed its first battery-powered electric SUV and plans to sell several versions of it in Australia later in 2019. Pricing is expected to be Tesla-like,  starting around $100,000.

The EQC is powered by an 80kWh lithium-ion battery that the company says can be charged form a normal power socket or a high-performance wall-mounted home charger. The claimed charging time with the 22kW wall charger is 40 minutes to lift capacity from 10-percent to 80-percent.

Claimed range from the 2450kg, 300kW/765Nm EQC is up to 450km and performance is 'electrifying', with a 0-100km/h time of only 5.1 seconds.

With electric motors powering front and rear axles the EQC has the ability to torque vector each wheel according to its grip and stability control, traction control, hill descent control and 'diff lock' action can all be computer controlled and delivered electrically, without the need to activate the wheel brakes.

We'll have more information on the EQC range nearer to the official launch date.
