MERCEDES-BENZ NEW GENERATION ALL WHEEL DRIVE TRUCKS

New cab, engines, transmissions and chassis for M-B's off-roaders.

Mercedes-Benz has released its new-generation all-wheel drive truck range, consisting of 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 models. Mining, construction, remote maintenance, fertiliser spreading and off-road adventure travel are among the design applications for the new all-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz range.

The all-wheel drive range extends from a 16-tonnes-GVM 300hp 4x4 up to to a 41-tonnes-GVM 460hp 8x8.

New 7.7-litre and 11-litre six-cylinder Euro 6 engines are standard and a 13-litre engine is optional on some models.

Advanced technology is at the heart of the new generation Mercedes-Benz all-wheel drive trucks, with new engine families helping to deliver performance increases and fuel economy improvements.

All engines are said to meet Euro 6 emission standards and feature asymmetric turbocharging and X-Pulse high-pressure direct injection, tuned to deliver more usable torque and assist with low speed drivability.

A standard, high performance engine brake helps drivers navigate steep descents and a hydraulic retarder is optional.

The all-wheel drive models also have a cyclone pre-filter cleaner to cope with dusty environments.

An eight-speed PowerShift automated transmission is fitted behind the 7.7-litre engine and a nine-speed manual is optional. An Allison five-speed torque convertor automatic is also available as an option in the 300hp 1630 model.

The 11-litre engine is paired with an automated 16-speed PowerShift transmission that has 50 per-cent faster gear changes than previous generation AWD models. The PowerShift transmission has a crawl function that allows for easy uphill liftoffs and precise manoeuvring control.

A low-speed transfer case is fitted to all models for optimal off-road performance.

The 4x4 models operate in rear-wheel-drive mode until all-wheel drive is selected by the driver. The 6x6 and 8x8 models operate in all-wheel drive mode at all times.

The 4x4 has a rear differential lock and 6x6 and 8x8 models have front and rear axle differential locks.

Mercedes-Benz has developed a new heavy duty, off-road chassis with high torsional flexibility, using cold-formed ultra-high-tensile steel.

The new cabs deliver improved comfort and refinement and exceed the ECE R29 standard and the Swedish Cab Test.

A new driver-focused interior delivers improvements in refinement levels, with dashboard controls located within easy reach of the driver, supplemented by steering wheel controls.

The all-wheel drive range comes standard with an ABS/Electronic Braking System that controls braking and traction functions, including Hill Hold Assist and Traction Control (ASR).

We’ve lined up 4x4 and 6x6 test vehicles and will have a report ASAP.
