QUOKKA CAMPER WITH 'TOY' STORAGE
A lightweight camper with bike storage built in.
Although the 2014 Quokka is dimensioned like a camper trailer and weighs about the same, it has ample interior space and payload capacity to carry two dirt bikes.
Just as the small Western Australian macropod, the quokka, is a virtual 'shrunken' kangaroo, so its camper-trailer namesake is a shrunken version of a bush-toy-carrying caravan.
The Quokka is designed and built by aircraft airframe technicians, so it's strong yet light. Exterior panels are aluminium foam sandwich construction, for strength and inbuilt insulation and the chassis uses structural aluminium extructions.
Tare weight is a claimed 1000kg and GVM is 1800kg, for an 800kg payload rating.
Air suspension is standard, with twin air bellows atop a tubular steel beam that's located by LandCruiser forged-steel leading arms, turned around to serve as trailing arms. Why hasn't anyone thought of that before?
The interior featues a rubber-faced floor, with large cargo tie downs and fold-down single beds on each side, above large storage bins. A tranversely-mounted double bed is fitted across the front of the bodywork and a pop-top roof ensures headroom throughout.
Twin sets of fan-action bars support a SupaWing, quick-opening, full-length side awning that covers a pull-out gas stove and storage drawers. The air-actuated rear door swings up and there's a canvas tent available to fit under it when it's open.
Standard kit includes a 110-litre water tank, 12/240-volt electrical system, portable hot water, LED lighting, windows with mesh, six lockers, Treg coupling, jockey wheel and gas bottle holder.
The Quokka was priced at $54,990 in August 2014.
